Aao Sunaoon Pyar Ki Ek Kahani - Indian Music Scenario - The Fallen Times!

Rajesh Roshan has come up with quite an unlikely present day song. And I was correct. The roots of this melody can be traced in the background score of Kaho Na Pyar Hai. In the scene where Hrithik and Amisha are stranded on a deserted island, there is a shot where Hrithik is running towards the make-shift flag (made of Amisha’s skirt) - the dholak-based tune in that shot is same as the lines, ‘Aao sunaoon pyaar ki ek kahani’.

Often music directors develop their own background scores into full-fledged songs. Shankar-Jaikishan were particularly known to do this often. Shiv Hari converted Chandni’s love theme into the sumptuous Kabhi Mai Kahun for Lamhe.

The reason that we don’t get to hear more such instances these days is that music composers don’t do the background scores of their films. In all probabilities, there is a separate composer involved to do the background music.

Now I hope KNPH’s background score was Rajesh Roshan’s own only; else, in these days of ‘open source’ you never know whose tune becomes someone else’s. The website, http://www.itwofs.com/ has exposed that the second promoted song ‘Dil na diya’ is a lift from Turkish source! Sigh! Wither originality? Rajesh Roshan is not even ‘over worked’ to not have used his brains to create something fresh - and he can’t hide behind ‘producer-ne-kaha’ excuse because this is a family production. So Roshan saab, care to explain why?

People like Preetam have made a career out of copying tunes. My letter in Filmfare May 2006 won the Best Letter Prize ripping apart Preetam’s claims as an ‘original composer’ ( he said he ‘rarely’ copied, and when he did he always mentioned the source). Do read it if you can.

The site itwofs is a goldmine as it exposes many composers’ thefts - old and new; along with a write up, the site owner Karthik presents small clips, giving proof of the extent which composers have stolen the original tune. Needless to say that the newer composers are more blatant and unabashed in their copying. The older ones made sure to cover it up enough with their own signature style and effort.

Some big shocks from this site were the absolutely shameless lifts in Dhadkan, Parineeta and Khamoshi songs. But what broke the heart (and even Karthik mentions it so) was Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’s ‘Akele hain toh kya gham hai’; as he states:

This would rate as one of the most heart-breaking lifts I’ve encountered so far! And its so damn blatant that you almost think that the instrumental piece I’ve added here is simply an instrumental version of the QSQT track. The first thing that came to my mind after listening to the original was, ‘…and they got paid for this?’ Note: I still think someone’s gonna mail me saying that the original listed above is nothing but an instrumental version of the Hindi track and that this site sucks.

In a recent interview Himesh Reshammiya said he makes music for the young generation which downloads songs from internet. Coming from an industry insider, this is the nearest one can get to legitimizing music piracy - and quite a volte face from his colleague Shabana Azmi, who once came shrilly pounding like a demented matron on Modern School kids dangling her finger at them, warning against music piracy (never mind the kids looked blankly trying to see if they have black patches over their eyes, the only image of pirates they know from story books!)

This a huge change from the past.

Any one from the generation of fifties/sixties will have fond stories to relate about the effort they made to listen to their favorite songs. I have heard it from dad. I have read it in many groups/forums - people have cycled long distances just to go to a shop playing the records of then current hits. I guess, that’s the reason the composers of that era had so much responsibility towards their listeners, (who made genuine efforts in appreciating their hard work), and thus they thought it fit to give them value-for-effort (mind you, in essence downloading and listening from a shop are similar; either ways, one is not buying the album - but the amount of hard work gone is different).

But now music is easy come and easy go; and I reckon, that’s how it is created as well.

horrible choreography…..I think Farah Khan is behind all this..as she’s the one responsible for the hit steps from the previous 2 hits…
    Preetam=Dhoom/Gangster fame wala Pritam ??

  3. Deepak Jeswal Says:

    MEHAK Gold aapka :D

Yes its a brilliant site. And u r so right - Hritik’s dance in the film and that biscuit advt are very irritating.

Yep Preetam of Dhoom/Gangster/Chocolate et al fame.

If u hv been to ITWOFS recently, u will know that all songs of GANGSTER are chori kiye hue!

Never knew about this site, that is, itwofs. Sure is an eye opener. I feel sorry for Hrithik though. I used to like him once but not any more.. too repetitive in his acting.

  5. Deepak Jeswal Says:

ANU Do check out the site - i m sure u will like it - and also get a few heartbreaks discovering that some favorite actually had a source in some international album.

Various music directors are listed page wise, and I hv been thru the discovery of this site - pained and shocked and surprised at many entries there.

Good to see u back - do u hv a blog? U hvnt left any URL ?

  6. mehak Says:

ohh DJ…in sab Music Directors ka BAAP….’Anu Malik’…he is a master is copying tunes from all over the world….

  7. Anu Says:

No I don’t have a blog, that is nothing up and running yet. I did create a couple of them a while ago but didnot post anything. I guess, I never had much to say…however if I do post something I will let you know. I am not sure if i even remeber my password or ID for anyone of them! But hpoefully yahan par to aapse baatein hoti rahengi.

  8. Nupur Says:

:D *lol* @ Mehak… I was going to say the same thing. How can we not mention Anu Malik in this list? But then you concluded very aptly, if this is the future of music and no one cares how they get their music - then I guess we’ve in a way had this coming…… because with the anout of time it’d take someone to create original music - 100 albums will have come and gone!!

  9. Deepak Jeswal Says:

MEHAK Woh toh lifetime achievement award le chuka hai in copying tunes :P

ANU I m sure there is enough to say once u start saying it :D Anyways, will wait for u to start full fledgedly, and tab tak sure, yahan toh baatein hoti rahengi

NUPUR True true…aur batao ji kya haal hai ?

  10. Prasad Says:

wooohoooo.. tht site is really a gold mine.. I thought Preetam was a gud composer.. and had some talent. now i understand where his talent came from!!!!
and yeah.. Anu malik will surely get tht award!!! :D

but as u said, when ppl r not caring much abt and going for remixes nowadays, they too r not wasting their time much in original scores..

  11. Deepak Jeswal Says:

PRASAD - Yeah I also had a great time discovering this site. Had mentioned it earlier in a post, but never could write one exclusively on this site. Had discovered it when i was in Nepal.

  12. Madhu Says:

Brilliant Site! I had been there earlier when there was a discussion in our group regarding Anu Malik’s thefts. This time I spent more time in listening the clips. Through this site I also got the link to Umme Kulsum’s(or Kulthum?) song which I was madly searching few months back. Pehli baar suni unki awaaz. Needless to tell u why I wanted to hear Umme K.

  13. Deepak Jeswal Says:

MADHU - Yep its a nice site … but sunnewaali cheez is that when SDB / SJ or RDB copied they made such huge changes that its too difficult to discern the source. Plus all of them had immense work to show, so the ratio always will be less. Unlike Mr. Preetam! Uff!

  14. Manish Says:

You have a remarkable ear. Now that you have mentioned that, I do recall slightly!

  15. Deepak Jeswal Says:

MANISH - A little thanks to all those repeat telecasts also ;)
