Krrish – Film Review
Welcome to India’s first superhero; and as that, Krrish does remarkably well. Rakesh Roshan’s films have always been fairly entertaining, including the ill-fated Kala Bazar and King Uncle. And now, he has improved vastly on the technical side which makes viewing more pleasurable.
Unless you are a hermit living in a cave, you would know that Krrish is a sequel to Roshan’s previous bumper hit Koi Mil Gaya – where in Rohit and Nisha’s son Krishna is born with all the powers that Jadoo, the extra terrestrial, had imparted Rohit with. Fearing that Krishna might fall into the same deadly fate’s trap as his father, Krishna’s grandmother Shalini Mehra (a suitably aged and wobbly Rekha) keeps her away from the world’s gaze. Krishna grows up in sylvan mountain surroundings, a sort of desi-Tarzan, only he has been given education. It’s a visit from Priya (Priyanka Chopra) from Singapore that begins the journey of the simpleton Krishna to the masked man Krrish. And there, he will also face the wily Dr. Arya (Naseerudin Shah).
The script is taut except for a slight sagging in the first half –which if reduced, could have kept the overall running time also less and more enjoyable. But once Krishna reaches Singapore, it goes into full ballistic. The script adequately peppers Rohit and Nisha’s reason-for-death at suitable places. And yes – an interesting point, which I enjoyed – the past about Rohit and what happens to him after KMG ends, has a very crucial role to play in this film; this is something that has not been talked about in promotions at all, but I feel this itself lends the film a solid weight. What is that? Well, I suggest you go and watch it and enjoy it unfold.
Of course, keeping in mind Indian sensibilities, the superhero is kept rooted in enough song-and-dance-and-emotion. Sensible? For this one, sort of – though I wish there was more of the ‘superhero’ than the normal ‘hero’. Here, the superhero has only a personal agenda. Perhaps if another sequel is made, they could take Krrish’s character further to ‘save the planet’.
The film’s stunts and special effects are extraordinary, especially in Hindi films context. For those who have grown up on Superman/Batman/ Spiderman/Matrix might find it simply ordinary. I had imagined that in sophisticated multiplex-era, the days of clapping at hero’s stunts would be over – but was pleasantly surprised to see a ring of spontaneous clapping when Krrish takes on a posse of villains in the climax.
Rakesh Roshan’s direction is able. He keeps a strong control on the proceedings, and the narrative pace is pretty even.
Hrithik’s performance is superb – in all his various avatars – though at times his constant ‘flying’ and ‘movement’ gets irritating. For example, in the song ‘Koi Tumsa Nahin’ (incidentally, that was the film’s working title) one just wishes that he would stand still instead of yet again dancing. Priyanka plays a typical heroine and does well for herself, though she needs to do something about her dress-designer! Rekha and Naseeruddin Shah are seasoned performers, they are great.
Rajesh Roshan’s music lacks verve. Salim Sulaiman’s background score is good. Cinematography is awesome – especially the luxuriant and verdant mountain landscape has been captured in fine detail. As Priya says in the film – so soothing, so serene! Dialogues are ok. Editing is slick. Barring ‘Dil na diya’ I found the choreography jarring!
In all, Krrish is a good entertaining film and introduces a new genre to Hindi cinema.
Overall – Time Pass, Watch It!

hi sirji, kaise hai. like i said I am not keen on watching this one. cannot really digest desi superheros, bollywood superhero films are at least half a century behind hollywood ones so we will always remain the poor cousins. besides, hritik keeps on jumping all over the place ‘medakman’ would be apt for him. btw, bought the new house and moved in. whats up with you?

God, i missed two posts! i also missed Kaushi’s b’day VBM, i missed watching fanaa before it left the closest multiplex, i missed the wedding of two dear friend… gosh i’m on a missing spree!!!
krishh gets a shh! i don’t fancy watching HR monkeying around in superman-batman-neo style and the presence of priyaka chopra is an additional put off… guess i’ll do something better with my time…. like reading the two posts i missed!

ANKS – Well well, u know the saying na, ‘all work and no play’ waali… so stop missing stuff due to work , after a few years it wont seem worth it at all

i completly disagree with anks.i think he has a mental imbalance as he thought hrithik’s beautiful stunts as “monkeying” around. thank god u didn’t watch krrish coz i don’t the superb movie to have such a negative mind.

ANKSHITA – A warm welcome to my space here. Hope u will be a regular.
As regards, Anks I guess she – yeah, that’s her gender – is entitled completely and fully to express her own view point and opinion. To say that she has ‘mental imbalance’ is entirely uncalled for and a very harsh comment.

just read the first and last para….am gonna go watch it tomorrow so will come back after I see it to read it
dekhte hai how our reviews match?
Monday, 3. July 2006 4:13
Hey hey hey! I went, I saw, I read and I am back to commenting!!! har baar ki tarah our reviews are almost identical…I DEFINITELY while watching the movie thought….damn he should fight like in the matrix or something and wanted a nice action sequence…..the sequence in the end was good..but keeps one yearning for more….songs are not needed…but I enjoyed pyar ki ek kahani and dil na diya…
first thing I said when I came out was that technically this film is beyond Hindi film standards and very comparable to hollywood standards..and honestly, I enjoyed the movie!!! Its a complete entertainer..if one is intoo an emotional saga and mature sophisticated movies then I guess we should watch KANK..but Krrish is fundu! its fun, drama, action, comedy…everything..I liked it! And I know a lot of people out there dont like Hrithik, but I still think he is awesome..and does a great job acting..yesyes better than AB’s baby (there I said it….finally) who rates high in “cute” quotient. Rakesh Roshan has done an awesome job in making a complete entertainer

Me too liked the movie and stunts, though agree songs were below par, and first half could have been much better.
Hrithik, I think has made an awesome effort.
Like others I was too skeptical about the concept of Indian super hero, but it was good time pass. Thank GOD he didn’t actually save the world, though indirectly he did so
Good review!

Deepak,
In the song Koi Tumsa Nahin – the antara looked very familiar, very soothing!
Rajesh Roshan has the habit of lifting from his illustrious dad, but I am not able to guess from where did he lift this one, though I am sure he did from somewhere. Antara really kept me hooked to this song!!
Due you have an idea Or did you feel similarly!

Poonam – Hiii, and how r u ? Hope u r enjoying ur newly wed status to the fullest
Yes , even i m now a fan of WordPress – and the credit actually goes to you for this. Your recommendation helped me become a convert
Thanx a ton
Kaushi – LOL , HR better than ABJr ha ha , do i see some ruffled feathers here
But, personally I also like ABJr better. HR has been superb in Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish, no doubt about that – lekin, baap ke saaye se baahar kuchh karega woh, is the million dollar question now! True, Rakesh Roshan deserves all accolades for making this another entertainer.
Manish – Chaliye good hai , our views match on this one
About ‘koi tumsa nahi’ i will have to listen to it carefully now again. But I found the mukhda , the portion ‘dhoop nikalti hai jahan se’ quite similar to Rajesh Roshan’s own ‘Tumse badhkar duniya mein’ (Kaamchor). Now let me see if the antara has some other source
Tuesday, 4. July 2006 9:16
Actually, there is not much different between Mukhda and Antara as far as tune is concerned.
Now I remember why both sounded so familiar
Tuesday, 4. July 2006 9:18
Waise our views on movies and music usually match. Just that as you had mentioned you had “other” reasons to love Fana
One reason I am sure is beautiful Delhi. Other I am not sure, but may be I am

Manish – True …
