MMsaab’s music is a lifeline for me. And every time I hear his songs (which I do quite a lot) I keep wondering how in the name of good heavens did he conjure up such a beautiful thing. And how did Lata Mangeshkar manage to convey what MM wanted to. But then, the mind has to succumb to the heart, and all that remains is me immersed in the swirling notes of his music.

Dear Deepak,

I had a conversation with a friend of mine many years ago, where we were discussing our favorite composers. I gave two names, Madan Mohan saab, and Hridaynath Mangeshkar are the only ones, who would evoke a powerful emotion out of me. I remember their compositions for the pain they convey through their music. Their renditions are capable of ripping a soul apart.

We also had a discussion, what would make these composers convey so much pain through their songs, and we didn’t arrive at any consensus? Is it because of the suffering, they had to go through in their personal lives? Their songs tell a story by itself, and their tunes are so melodious in that, if all the instruments were to stop playing suddenly, one would not feel their absence.

That was a good piece you wrote and a good selection of songs. I’ve bookmarked this page. Cheers !!

by chance i stumbled on your notes on my father.. quite overwhelming!

u have a sensitivity to understanding music in todays times.. very rare, very refreshing… its so easy and often to be criticized for ones efforts .. i have been through this always, all my life.. not that it bothers me.. but to find admirers of my fathers work, who unflinchingly support him, its very heartening. … it does hurt to read the nasty comments out there… but i never bother really.. history cannot be challenged.. and thanks to people like u , it will remain documented.. keep the good work on.. whichever legend u write about.. just nurture them.. dont berate them, they dont deserve the hatred.. they need the love and appreciation, preferably in their lifetime, regards. sabjeev kohli

Dear Deepak,
Thanks for the warm welcome. Much appreciated. MM was one of the great icons of hindi film music. Very special and unique compositions. These days I am hooked to one of his songs, keep listening to it every now n then. It is Ek Baat Poochhti Hoon.. The end of the beginnin prelude is something really touching. The ascending violin fluorish is heart-rending as well as moving. Maybe it’s just me but it evokes a thousand memories in my mind. Takes me back down the memory lane and stirs a lot of pleasant visions from my collection of past memories. So nostalgic.

I would feel honoured to be a part of the MM yahoo group. Please send me an invitation, if u can.

Star Sailor Hi and a very very warm welcome to the blog! Your list is awesome. Luv them all. Wud add his earlier works to them as well like Adaa, Ashiana which also had beautiful scores. Of course, his association with Raja Mehndi Ali Khan is a rich one. Sadly, lyricists are never given full due. And even with that, I feel Raja Mehndi Ali Khan and Rajinder Krishan both have always got a raw deal. Anyways, this space is a bit wrong to discus all this. We have a Madan Mohan group on Yahoo, and keep discussing these things there. We also pick up one movie from his rich ouvre every month and discuss that as well. Would you like to be a member there?

To list individual songs would be a tortuous task, there are just so many of them. And to omit some of them in doing so would be a huge injustice too. So let me take the liberty to just list some of the albums which are excellent through and through. Pick any song from any of these scores randomly and the chances are it will be a huge popular hit, a favourite.

Adalat. Sanjog. Chiragh. Heer Ranjha.

Enough is said about the MM-Lata combination, which I personally think is incredible, but what about MM-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan duo? He has penned some sublime ghazals and songs which inspired to bring out the best from MM.

Oh, what a match made in heaven… MM & Lata.

Lag ja gale is soop haunting. Brings tears to my eyes. I listen to it very sparingly, because dont want it become too familiar, if u get what i mean.
