Remix Relief

While HRD Ministry draws rightful flak for its regressive reservation policy, there is a positive tune also emanating from its corridors. The Ministry has proposed changes to the archaic Copyright Act 1957. Under the proposed changes, it will be difficult for the remix brigade to pick up any song and maul and distort it at their fancy - the journey from beautiful to beat-iful will get tougher!

Hindustan Times reports:

In a bid to protect the artistic rights of popular musicians and lyricists of Bollywood, the ministry has proposed several changes in the Copyright Act, 1957. To reproduce the tune or the lyrics in any form will require permission of the rights holder. But if the period is of less than five years, the approval will have to be taken fo rthe kind of the alterations or remix been proposed

Sounds good. Also, the credits to original artists will have to be made mandatory, and royalty paid to them as well. Very interesting - I hope they also specify the font size of these credits. Else, I can almost foresee a convenient loop-hole there.

The second issue, of which I am not sure of but can be troublesome, is that who really holds the rights of the old songs? Is it the artists or the music company? Most likely, its the latter. In that case, the changes can fall flat on its faces. Approx. 75-80% of old songs are with one company; if that company chooses not to allow grant permission to the newer ones, its ok. But, that same company is no less guilty of the remix trauma unleashed on music lovers - remember Deepal Shaw and Baby Doll remixes?

Let me find more about the ‘rights’ control.

Anyways, the proposed changes are more than welcome and I sincerely pray they implement it fast. I hope the remix fad will die down now.

Your earlier post was quite informative indeed. Came to know about many that I didn’t know.

I had some collection of the original Paki songs from which Indi composers copied - Dhadkan, Ashiqee, Yes Boss etc. and many more. I will send you by mail.

And you know Indi composers have copied from Nepali songs - such as Deewana mujha sa nahi iss ambar ke niche - Tisari Manzil, Musu musu hansi deu - Pyar men Kabhee Kabhee and many more. I don’t remember all. I will send you list later on :) .
